Apache Junction, AZ- Gustav AJ “Gussie” Speder Jr, 58, of Apache Junction, formerly of Springfield, IL, passed away at 6:00 pm Thursday, June 26, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Hospital, Springfield, IL.
He was born in Springfield, July 21, 1966, the son of Gustav AJ “Gus” and Kathy (Gedney) Speder Sr. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and continued to be a member there. After graduating from Springfield High School, Gussie earned his associate degree from Parks College, St. Louis, MO. in Aviation Mechanics.
He worked in the industry for several years, lastly with the Arizona Air Salvage in Tuscan. He enjoyed other professions as well, an over the road truck driver and landscaping. He was a member of the American Legion Post 27 in Apache Junction, AZ. Gussie found extraordinary joy in cooking, fishing, camping, and taking long drives. He was a fan of NASCAR.
He married Terri Austin in Las Vegas, NV on July 15, 2007, and she survives. Also surviving are his parents of Springfield, two sisters: Andrea (Jeff) Sarver of Champaign, IL, and Greta (David) Vierzba of St. Charles, MO. He has three step children; Lori (Jeremie) Wood of Scottsdale, AZ, Cara (Timothy) Wildner and Jacob Kulak both of Mesa, AZ, four grandchildren: Verity and Vadin Zimmerman, Adelis Wood and Logan Wildner, five nephews: Kellen and Joel Sarver, Gage, Elden and Kelby Vierzba, his aunt MaryAnne Baker and his cousins, Steven and Jeffery Baker, Maria Speder and Sharon (Chris) Sprinkle Preceding him in death were his grandparents, an aunt, Margaret Speder and his two uncles, Walter Speder and Bob Baker.
Private services will be held with Pastor Aaron Mueller officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may direct memorial contributions in his name to Trinity Lutheran Church or the Apache Junction Animal Control Adopt a Pet.
The Speder family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to Katie DeMarco and her team who serve as the Cancer Navigating Team, friends in the Infusion Unit, SIU Simmons Cancer Institute, Memorial Medical Foundation, and all those at Springfield Memorial Hospital who cared for Gussie.
