Hannah Theresa McDaniel lived 84 years filled with laughter, love, patience, music, faith, and an enduring curiosity about the world. She passed away on April 14, 2026, leaving behind a lasting legacy of kindness, quiet generosity, and (true to her nature) spectacularly well-cared-for pets.
Hannah graduated from Lyons Township High School in 1960 and went on to study at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she earned her bachelor’s degree and became a Registered Nurse. While there, she noticed a young dental student who always chose two vegetables in the cafeteria line…and she paid attention to such things. She and Richard McDaniel were married on June 20, 1965, beginning a partnership that would span sixty-one years and be marked by shared purpose, steady devotion, and a lifelong commitment to learning.
Hannah loved her community and was a longtime supporter of organizations, including the Springfield Public Schools Foundation, the Springfield Art Association, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Springfield Choral Society, and WUIS/National Public Radio. She was also a member of P.E.O. Chapter EO and the Grateful Daughters Circle of the King’s Daughters Organization, and many others. She was a devoted member of Central Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and served as a Circle leader.
In her professional life, Hannah served the State of Illinois in the Client Assessment Unit for more than two decades. She approached her work with compassion and perspective, and she deeply valued the camaraderie of her colleagues. Even when the work was difficult, she believed in the importance of humor and never lost her sense of lighthearted play.
Hannah was a lifelong learner in the truest sense. She was an avid reader, took up cello after she retired, quilted and admired the quilts of others, and remained endlessly open to new experiences. She traveled extensively, exploring much of Europe and the United States and taking cooking classes, singing in cathedrals, hiking, and embracing the world around her.
She believed that bread is merely a vehicle for butter; that you are never really anonymous; that you will be known by the company you keep; that being kind matters more than being right; that caring for one another is a joy, not just an obligation; that there is always a reason to smile; that what others think of you is none of your business; and that dogs, without question, belong on the bed.
Above all, Hannah cherished her family, her friends, and her church. They were the center of her life and the recipients of her steady love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Alice M. “Polly” (Hamm) Harris.
Hannah is survived by her husband, Richard McDaniel of Springfield, IL; son, Andrew (Leanne) McDaniel of Littleton, CO; daughters, Sarah McDaniel of Littleton, CO, Sally McDaniel Smith of Springfield, IL, and bonus daughter Yetunde Agbesola; seven grandchildren, Emily & Lauren McDaniel, Glen, Willow, & Gideon Smith, and Thomas & Hannah Maldini; brother, Terry (Karen) Harris of Andover, MA; in-laws, Jon Nauman of Chugiak, AK and Pat and Charles Jones of Katy, Texas; and cherished nieces and nephews.
