

Helen Thompson Cannon, 88, of Springfield, died at 4:28 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2005 at Regency Nursing Care Residence after a long illness from Alzheimers. Helen was born February 5, 1917 in Buffalo Hart, IL the daughter of Alfred Frank and Marie Marrin Thompson. She married Dr. John F. Cannon on April 25, 1942 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church; he preceded her in death. Mrs. Cannon had worked for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), she was also a personal secretary to Rev. Msgr. Aloysius Schwartz and Rev. Hugh Cassidy at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for many years and when she was younger she had done some modeling with Marshal Fields in Chicago and studied opera. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Christ the King Altar and Rosary Society, St. Joseph’s Home Coterie, St. Louise de Marrillac Guild and Lindsay Place Ladies Group. She was active in the Lincoln Land Girl Scout Council and she started Parents Catholic Education Group with Bishop O’Connor. She was also preceded in death by her parents, sister, Bernis Rita Fraser and niece, Susan Fraser. She is survived by her son: John Cannon, Jr. of Chicago; two daughters: Patricia “Trinket” Eckler of Springfield, Kathy (husband, Donald) Maslouski of Springfield; five grandchildren; one great grandson; three great granddaughters; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Family will receive friends from 4-7:00 p.m. Monday, June 27, 2005 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield, with a prayer service at 4:45 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1930 Barberry, Springfield, with Rev. Peter Harman celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
