I can best describe Helen as a person who knew where the lines were and she wasn't afraid to let someone know when the lines were crossed. But, she also was willing to step across the line to bring God's grace to the transgressors. When I arrived in Spfld., Helen and I almost immediately tangled over how I did evangelism. I quickly discovered that she was a force to be reckoned with. (Yes, understatement; I know). Yet when we worked it through, I discovered also that she was a wonderful friend to have. And more than a friend. Sorry, Hoffman kids; you've got another brother. She became a mother to me. Yet without the checkered past of youthful transgressions. It was the joy of an adult relationship with one's parent; honest talk about issues- work and personal- resulting in a sympathetic ear and sound advice. [Which is more than can be said for my relationship with my Hoffman siblings. Right, Susan? Shooting squirt guns at a pastor as he is faithfully performing his duties. Really?]

We didn't know Helen until she moved to Concordia Village and she was in her later years. We fly our US flag outside by our patio everyday unless we are away on a trip. Well, Helen would see us and ask where is your flag. She was not happy if that flag was not flying. We enjoyed that she noticed and tried to always make sure we had it out when we were at home.

I remember when I and a couple of friends along with Rebecca had a garage sale on Elliott and we used Mrs. Hoffman's garage. She went through all of our items and told us we weren't pricing them high enough. She was a real sharp cookie and very sweet person. I also remember when she and Rebecca came to comfort me the night my husband, Bob, died. My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

We met this little red headed lady out at cooks one afternoon and for the next several years we had a portion at the table. Then at Christmas time we were always over for a lot of cookies. Such a nice lady And she is now in God's hand.
