Helen Darlene Smith

Helen Darlene Smith, 79, of New Berlin, formerly of Loami, died at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2008 at Memorial Medical Center. Darlene was born November 13, 1928 in Loami, the daughter of Roscoe and Minnie Wake Nichols. She married Nolan "Bud" Smith on November 27, 1945; he preceded her in death. Darlene was a graduate of New Berlin High School. She was employed by Kresge / K-Mart for 29 years. She was passionate about cooking, especially for her family. Darlene also enjoyed reading and sewing and most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. They meant the world to her. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and grandson, Eric Taylor. She is survived by a son, Gary Smith of Springfield; a daughter, Bonnie (husband, Tom) Taylor of Springfield; four granddaughters; three step grandchildren; five great grandsons; two great granddaughters; two brothers, Bob Nichols of Virden and Don (wife, Nadine) Nichols of Loami; one aunt; one uncle; one niece; one nephew and several cousins. Family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2008 at McCullough-Delaney and Butler Funeral Home, 714 E. Gibson St., New Berlin. Funeral ceremonies will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008 at McCullough-Delaney and Butler Funeral Home with Rev. David Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Sulphur Springs Cemetery.
