Herbert G. "Herb" Theilen

Herb was born at home in rural Maxwell Twp., near Loami, IL July 27, 1926 the son of William S. and Elsie (Wallner) Theilen. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, March 17, 1940. He married Esther Kochman at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Springfield, Feb. 14, 1954. His parents, and 3 sisters; Elma Binetsch, Norma Nowak, and Carolyn Leady all preceded him in death.

He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He earned the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, the United Nations Service Medal and 2 Overseas Bars.

Herb was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in New Berlin, IL for many years where he served on various boards and committees including the Board of Christian Education and served as a trustee. He was a member of the Sangamon County Farm Bureau.

Herb was a lifelong farmer in the Chatham area. He also served as road commissioner for Curran Twp. from 1971-1977.

Surviving are his wife of over 60 years, Esther, his children; John (Janet) Theilen, Cynthia (Mark) Ushman, Donna Mapes, all of Springfield, and Glenn Theilen of Chatham. He has 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Also surviving are his brother, Loren Theilen of Knoxville, TN as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Visitation: The Theilen family will received friends from 2-5 pm Sunday, Dec. 28, 2014 at Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield and from 9 am until 10 am Monday, Dec. 29, 2014 at the funeral home.

Funeral Services: Funeral services will be held at 10 am Monday, Dec. 29, 2014 at Bisch Funeral Home West with his grandson, Rev. Joshua Theilen and Rev. David Benning officiating. Burial will follow in Chatham Memorial Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the U. S. Army.
