

He was born on February 25, 1948, in Springfield to Ruth Mitchell Hinds and Hubert H “Hank” Hinds. On April 11, 1970, Spud married the love of his life, Margaret Barger, and she survives. Together they built a beautiful life and were blessed with two beloved children, Heather and Luke Hinds also of Springfield.
Spud is survived by his wife Margaret; children, Heather (Scott) Dickerson of Springfield and Luke (Libby) Hinds also of Springfield; his brothers, George Hinds and James “Jim” Hinds both of Springfield. He is preceded in death by his parents Hank & Ruth Hinds, infant brother Tracy Allen Hinds, sister Ruth Albert and brother-in-law Raymond McGill.
Spud leaves behind his four grandchildren who he adored, Dylan Dickerson, Kayla Dickerson, Parker Hinds and Jackson Hinds ; sisters-in-law, Catherine McGill and Tanette Hinds; brother-in-law, Bob Albert; several nieces, nephews and many cousins who loved him dearly.
Spud was a proud veteran of the US Navy serving for 3 years 7 months and 19 days from 1968 – 1972 on the USS Wood County and USS Talbot County. He then worked as a sheet metal worker at Pillsbury Mills for 24 years, Cargill for 11 years and a Supervisor for the Transportation Security Administration for 11 years.
Spud bravely fought Pancreatic cancer for 8 years. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. A true handyman, he could fix just about anything and took pride in helping others. Spud could be found around Illinois at his favorite place, attending any and all sporting events of his grandchildren. He cherished time spent with his family and going to breakfast with several of his group of friends. A true family man, Spud loved collecting tools and hanging out in his shop, he brought laughter and love to every room he entered.
He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.
The family will greet friends on Tuesday June 2, 2026 from 4:00pm-6:30pm at Bisch and Son Funeral Home, 505 East Allen Street. A private graveside will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery and memorial contributions can be made to the Northender’s VFW Post 10302.
