

Hugh William Griffith, Jr., 90, of Springfield, died at 2:42 p.m. on Tuesday, November 22, 2016 at Memorial Medical Center. Hugh was born April 29, 1926 in Birmingham, AL, the son of Hugh William and Mittice Hyman Griffith, Sr. He married Dorothy Skellie Griffith on May 18, 1952 in Long Beach, MS; she preceded him in death on July 15, 2005. He later married Mary Jane Thomson on November 12, 2006 in Springfield. Hugh graduated from Hueytown High School and earned his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University in 1948. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII and was employed with Sangamo Electric in 1949 until being recalled back into the Navy in 1950 during the Korean War. After leaving the Navy, he rejoined Sangamo Electric and was employed there until his retirement in 1989 as Vice President of Sales. He achieved Eagle Scout in 1942 and was a recipient of the Silver Antelope, the highest regional honor bestowed upon a volunteer from the Boy Scouts of America. Hugh was a member of the Chatham United Methodist Church and was an avid Auburn University football fan. He enjoyed fly fishing, camping, and woodworking. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Thomson of Springfield; his children, Deborah Griffith (husband, Terry) Keeling of Louisville, KY, Amy Griffith (husband, Gary) Taylor of Nashville, TN, Hugh W. "Bill" (wife, Monica Ochoa) Griffith III of Chicago, Philip Griffith of Birmingham, AL, and Michele "Micki" (husband, Ken) Dickerson of Springfield; grandchildren, Lauren Elaine Taylor, Michael Griffith Taylor and Andy (wife, Monica) Dickerson; and great-grandson, Jacob Dickerson. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies. Memorial Gathering: Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 25, 2016 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.
