Jim was born in Springfield, August 17, 1943 the son of Connie N. and Mary R. (Guthrie) Banhart. He married Joan E. Richards July 1, 1968 in Jacksonville, IL and she preceded him in death, May 29, 2003. Jim was also preceded in death by his parents, his sisters: Mary Etta Banhart, Jo Ann Mallonee, and Carolyn Winner, as well as his brother Robert Banhart and a step-son, Jeff Richards.
Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1965-1967 earning the National Defense Service Medal and achieving Marksmanship (Rifle M-14)
Jim retired from the State of Illinois Lottery after several years of service. He was a self-taught musician and passed that talent on to several friends and family members. He played in various bands in the central Illinois area. Jim was also a skilled billiard player. He was a member of the American Pool Players Association and the Valley League as well as others.
Surviving are his sister, Susan (Bernie) Hallowell of Taylorville, IL, his brother Clarence Banhart of Springfield, step children: Teri, Lori, Lisa, Pam and Greg. There are several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are in the care of Bisch and Son Funeral Home 505 E. Allen St. Springfield, IL where visitation for family and friends will be from 11:30 am Monday, August 2, 2021 until the time of a funeral service at 12:30 pm. Pastor Jerry Thorpe Jr will officiate. Burial will follow in Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Department of Defense and Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
