

James Michael Canfield, 81, of Springfield, passed away at 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center. James was born on January 28, 1937 in Springfield, the son of Walter K. and Annabelle (McGuire) Canfield. He married Judith Marie Baker on January 30, 1973 in Springfield; she preceded him in death on May 12, 2002. James was a graduate of Springfield High School. He was president of Canco Inc. and previously president of Canfield Excavating Company. Jim was a self-made man with a strong work ethic. As an excavating contractor, he began his business in 1956. He was instrumental in the excavation of many major projects in Springfield and Las Vegas during his 62 years in business. He continued to operate heavy equipment into his mid-70s. He was a member of Operating Engineers #965 and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He attended Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jack, Joe, and Bill Canfield; and his former wife, Lois (McCormick) Canfield. He is survived by three daughters, Debra Veach and Cheryl Canfield, both of Springfield and Whitney (husband, Mark) Scifres of Champaign; six grandchildren, Ray and Nicolle Scifres, Jesse Veach, Josh (wife, Kim) Veach, Jay Veach, and Jenna (husband, Anthony) Bucci; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Fileccia of Champaign; one brother, Dick Canfield of Pleasant Plains; and many nieces and nephews.
