

James Thayer Mohan, 77 of Springfield died at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 28, 2004 at St. John’s Hospital. James was born September 12, 1927 in Chatham, the son of James and Emma Lattner Mohan. He married Doris Burba on August 1, 1969 in Springfield. He was educated in Chatham Public schools and the University of Illinois receiving a B.S. in 1947 and L.L.B. in 1949. He served as a part-time instructor in Economics and Political Science at the University of Illinois from 1947 – 1951. James practiced law in the John M. Mitchem Law Offices in Urbana, Illinois from 1949 – 1951. He practiced law in Springfield from 1953 to 1991, serving as an associate with Stevens, Herndon and Nafziger from 1953 – 1960, served as a partner in Stevens, Herndon, Nafziger & Mohan from 1960 – 1965 and served independently with employed associates from 1965 – 1991. James law practice specialized in large, closely held business clients with resultant emphasis on federal tax law, corporate law, commercial law and real estate law. James served as a Judge Advocate in the United States Air Force from 1951 – 1953. He was a member of Illini Country Club and The Sangamo Club. He was preceded in death by his son: Robert B. Mohan in 2000 and grandson: James T. Mohan II in 2001. He is survived by his wife: Doris Mohan of Springfield, daughter: Kathleen Mohan of Raleigh, NC , son: David (wife, Michele) Mohan of Ft. Mill, SC, five grandchildren: Michael Mohan of Springfield, Katie and Jim Guess both of Tucson, AZ, Courtney and Jacquelyn Mohan both of Ft. Mill, SC, two great grandchildren: Kori and Alyssa Mohan of Springfield. Cremation will be accorded by Cremation Tribute Center, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. The family will receive friends for a memorial gathering from 11:00 a.m. – 12 Noon on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Memorial Services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home. Private Inurnment will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to Charity of Donor’s Choice. The family of James Thayer Mohan is being served by Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home and Cremation Tribute Center.
