

James G. "Jimmy" Settles, 76, of Springfield passed away at 4:17 p.m. on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield. Jim was born March 11, 1937 in Beardstown, the son of James T. and Katheryn "Jane" Settles. He married Donna Merold in Lincoln, IL in 1960 and they had 53 loving years of marriage. Jim attended Springfield High School and was known as "Gilly". Upon graduating in 1955, he attended Bradley University for two years. He served in the United States Marine Corps. from June of 1957 to April of 1959. Jim worked for the Illinois Secretary of State as an administrator in data processing for 33 years. After retirement, he took a part time job with Vono Medical Supply and later Oratech Inc. Jim served on the board of the Springfield Youth Hockey Association, and coached several hockey teams. He also coached his children's baseball and softball teams. Jim was "Big Boss" at the 1971 YMCA Round-Up and was known as "Itchy". He served as Republican Precinct Committee Man in Ward 8 Precinct 36 for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father, Monroe "Vots" Votsmier. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Donna Settles of Springfield; two children, Bradley James Settles of Auburn and Denise Ann Settles of Springfield; two grandchildren, Dalton James Settles and Nicholas James Settles; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 29, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 30, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Rev. Greg Busboom officiating. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
