

James Wavering, 94, of Chatham, died at 5:48 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at the Villas of Hollybrook. James was born on March 21, 1924 in Quincy, IL, to Anton H. and Loretta E. Wavering. He married Doris E. Monckton of Quincy on April 23, 1945 while in service. She preceded him in death on February 13, 2004. James graduated from Quincy Notre Dame High School, class of 1942. He entered in to service with the U.S. Navy in late 1942. While in service, he attained the rank of LTJG. James was a World War II veteran and served in the Pacific Theatre. He was discharged from active duty in 1947 and from the Naval Reserves in 1955. After his service, James attended the University of Illinois and graduated with a bachelors degree in architectural engineering in 1951. After graduation, he was employed by the State of Illinois in the Division of Highways. James worked in the Bureau of Bridges as a structural design engineer and also worked as a licensed structural engineer for the State of Illinois. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. James was also preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Gerald A. Wavering. He is survived by his children, Dan (Tiffany) Wavering of Springfield, Deborah Wavering of Springfield, Jay Wavering of Springfield, Kathy (Kevin) Shrake of Chatham, Gary (Michelle) Wavering of Upland, CA; Jim Wavering of Springfield, and Mary Jo (Steven) Hall of Springfield; ten grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 9:30 - 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield. Funeral Mass: 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Rev. Jeff Grant, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
