And so we come to the end of an era. We enjoyed the life, times and tutelage of Jennie (Agatha Johanna) Pop who left this earth on March 23, 2019. Oma, as the family called her, enjoyed 91+ years of a loving life. She was born in Rotterdam, Holland in 1927. Jennie lived through World War II, afterwards met and married Steve Pop. Relocating to Steve’s farm outside Taylorville, IL, Jennie was primarily a homemaker raising their 3 children.
Jennie enjoyed bowling, bingo, music, theater, traveling and mostly of late, the casino slots. She worked at the Taylorville High School cafeteria, where she got to know her children’s friends.
A devoted wife and mother, Jennie did everything and anything for her family. Known for her superb knitting and crocheting skills, her booties became a well-loved gift to family and friends nationwide. Jennie was an excellent storyteller of her life experiences – and boy, were there stories!
Jennie is survived by two daughters: Joanie Pop (David Smelcer) and Cindy “Squid” Pop (Charles “Boots”) Howard; four grandchildren: Mandy Howard (Brian) Blumer, Jason Howard (Stacy Fisher); Justin (Candice) Pop; and Ashley Pop (Bobby) Barrow; eleven great-grandchildren; and one living brother: Martin (Nelly) Arnold. Jennie’s husband (Steve Pop), son (Jerry Pop) and five siblings preceded her in death.
Jennie’s “Celebration of Life” will be held on May 4 from 2pm – 5pm at The Pillars in Taylorville, IL. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
