

John "Jack" Patrick Flynn, 84, of Springfield, passed away at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. John was born September 7, 1930 in Chicago, the son of John and Lucille Brown Flynn. He married Margaret "Peg" Pilcher on March 17, 1956 at St. Joseph Church in Springfield; she preceded him in death in 2012. John graduated from Cathedral High School in 1949. He was Chairman of the Northend Democrat Club, and was a precinct committeeman for many years. He worked for Butternut Bread before retiring in 1988 after 35 years of service and Illinois Secretary of State before retiring in 1993 after 19 years of service. He also served in the United States Army serving in Alaska. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed drinking coffee while watching old war films, watching CNN and talking politics. He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, John Flynn; two grandchildren, Sean Michael Flynn and Shannon Marie Flynn; and one sister, Lou Hanselman. He is survived by two sons, Robert (wife, Chris) and James (wife, Lisa); two daughters, Becky (husband, Glen) Banning and Patty (husband, Barry) Buragas; daughter-in-law, Ellen Flynn, all of Springfield; ten grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marge Reid and Rita (husband, Donald) McClure; one brother, Bob Flynn; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved four legged companion, Lady. Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 13, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 N. 6th St., Springfield, with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz, celebrant. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
