

John L. "Jack" Mattsson, 73, of Girard, died at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at Pleasant Hill Nursing Home. Jack was born September 10, 1938 in LaCrosse, WI, the son of Elmer J. and Agnes Lien Mattsson. Jack served three years in the Army Active Duty, two of those years in Anchorage, Alaska. He retired after 34 years in the Army Reserves where he had become a member of the US Army Marksmanship team. Jack was awarded the Distinguished Pistol Shot Metal, which he earned as part of the U.S. Army Reserve Pistol Team. He had also worked as a heavy equipment operator for several local companies. He was a life member of Elks Lodge #158, Operating Engineers Local #965, and NRA. Jack enjoyed spending time with friends, attending shooting matches and making new friends, traveling, taking Sunday drives, and discovering new roads and restaurants. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by one son, John (wife, Tina) Mattsson of Springfield, their children, David, John, Russell and Niki, and five great-grandchildren; one daughter, Katherine Rapp of Wapella, her children, Miranda, Dustin and Cody, and six great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard "Dick" (wife, Jeanette) Mattsson and their children, Jeff, Deborah, Karen and Tim; two sisters, Mary Jane (husband, Tom) Lundsgaard of Anacortes, WA, and Margery Ann (husband, Gary) Stueve of New Bremen, OH, and their children, Christopher (wife, Shalia) Stueve, and Julie (husband, Rod) Carter; and aunt and uncle, Morraine and Morrell Lien of Twin Valley, MN. Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center. Graveside Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
