

John A. Vono, 68, of Springfield, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2009 at St. John's Hospice. John was born May 20, 1941 in Springfield, the son of Joeseppe C. and Maclena E. Tega Vono. He married Dorothy Gietl at St. Patrick's Church on June 22, 1963. John graduated from St. Louis College of Pharmacy in 1963. Early in his career as a registered pharmacist, he worked at various Springfield pharmacies and then became the head pharmacist at Springfield Clinic serving on the board of directors. John founded Vono Pharmacy and Convenient Center in 1982. That business expanded into Vono Pharmacies and Medical Supplies with multiple locations opening in the following years. John's accomplishments during his journey through life include serving as president of the Springfield Pharmaceutical Association, and serving on the board of directors for the American Diabetes Association, United Cerebral Palsy in Springfield, and Champions Pointe Association in Naples, Florida. He was a member of the Roman Cultural Society and Rotary International and was currently serving as a board member for the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. He was a member of Panther Creek Country Club and the Classics Country Club, Naples, Florida. John especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, golfing and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joseph Vono, II; and two sisters, Edith "Cookie" Barton and Madeline Menzes. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Vono of Springfield; daughter, Susan (husband, Kevin) Cain of Springfield; son, John Vono, Jr. of Champaign; two grandchildren, Justin and Seth Cain; brother, Tom (wife, Linda) Vono of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Family will receive friends from 4:00 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Concelebrated Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 12, 2009 at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1930 Barberry Dr., Springfield with Rev. Msgr. David S. Lantz, principal celebrant. Private family burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made for research and mailed to the American Cancer Society, 687 E.
