

Joe was born October 26, 1947, in Springfield, the son of Joseph J. Sr. and Esther (Hinz) Chernis.
He graduated from St. James Trade School in 1965 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Arlington during the Vietnam War. Joe was employed for 35 years with 3M Corporation and along with his son, Joey co-owned Midwest Demolition and Scrap, Inc. Additionally, he was road commissioner for Springfield Township from 1997-2005. He was a life member of DAV, VFW Post 10302, the American Legion Post #32, and St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Joe was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a partner in Lanesville/Chicago Hunting Club since 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Marilyn (Kirkland) Duncan.
Joe is survived by his son; Joey (Amy) Chernis of Sherman; grandson, Devin Chernis of Riverton; siblings, Cheryl Gibbons of Tellico Plains, TN and John Chernis of Sherman; and a niece and nephew.
Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 12th, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
Funeral Ceremony: 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 13, 2022, at Butler Funeral Home-Springfield with Rev. George Nellikinnel officiating. Illinois COVID-19 guidance will be followed, requiring face coverings.
Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial detail of Sangamon County and the Department of Defense.
