Joseph William Fassero

Joe was born on October 20, 1937, in Springfield, IL, the son of William and Lorene (Mc Gillick) Fassero. He married Karen Rose Doolin on October 28, 1961, at St. Mary’s in Litchfield, IL.

Joe graduated from Cathedral Boys High School, class of 1956, and went on to serve in the U.S. Army from January 1, 1961 to June 1961. He was recalled for active duty on November 1, 1961, and served during the Berlin Crisis. Joe retired from the Department of Transportation as a Senior Director of Highway Maintenance in 1992 after 35 years of service. He was an active member of St. Agnes Catholic Church of Springfield along with several clubs and organizations, including American Legion Post #32, Knights of Columbus 364, the Roman Cultural Society, and Italian American War Veterans Versace Post #15. Joe was an avid boater, fisherman, and golfer, who loved washing his cars, caring for his lawn, and snow blowing his neighbors’ driveways up and down Johnson Lane, where he lived for more than 60 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Lorene; and sisters, Sharon O’Brien and Karen Krueger.

Joseph is survived by his loving wife, Karen Fassero of Springfield; children, Jeff (Cathy) Fassero of Scottsdale, AZ, Finn (Cindee) Fassero of Springfield, IL, and Angela (Greg) Fassero Simmons of Athens, OH; eight grandchildren, Trevor Fassero, Blake Fassero, Chelsea (Grant) Hirschman, Megan Fassero, Lindsey (fiancé, Mike Farmer) Fassero, Eric Simmons, Tucker Simmons, and Ryan Simmons; and many nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.

Visitation & Mass of Christian Burial: Family will receive friends at 9:30 a.m., Monday, August 18, 2025, at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos Ave, Springfield, IL 62702, until the time of Mass at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Mick Egan, officiating.

Burial to follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL.
