Joseph A. Reid

Joseph A. Reid, 85, of Springfield, died at 10:47 a.m. on October 18, 2009 at St. John's Hospice. Joseph was born July 9, 1924 in Springfield, the son of John J. and Elizabeth A. Wood Reid. He married the beautiful Betty Jane Franklin on November 6, 1948 at St. Joseph's Church. Joseph graduated from Cathedral Boys High School in 1942. He served his country in the Navy from 1942 to 1946 as a Navy Radioman during WWII. Joseph was employed for nearly 40 years with the UMWA Health and Retirement Funds. He was an avid and dedicated golfer who enjoyed playing with his brothers and long time friends and has recorded a hole-in-one on the golf course. Joe was inducted into the Springfield Sports Hall of Fame in 2006 along with his brothers, Dave, Dick and Jack. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Reid. He is survived by his wife, Betty; a son, Joseph F. Reid of Los Angeles, CA; three daughters, Monica Reid (husband, Joe) Spence of Rockville, MD, Jane A. (husband, Greg) Field and Diane M. Chew both of Springfield; seven grandchildren, Danny Field, Rebecca Bailey, Drew and Holly Spence, and Joseph, Jeffery and Allison Chew; one great-granddaughter, Madelyn; two brothers, David (wife, Marge) Reid and Richard (wife, Doris) Reid both of Springfield; a sister, Mona (husband, Robert) Davis of Auburn; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Family will receive friends from 4:00 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. A Funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 23, 2009 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos Ave., Springfield, with Rev. Robert J. Jallas, celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors by the U.S. Navy and the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
