

Kenneth Robert Kurz, 86, a resident of Springfield for 45 years, formerly of Quincy, died at 7:25 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2006 at Lewis Memorial Christian Village. He was born on May 2, 1920 in Quincy, the son of Frank and Florence Moenning Kurz. He married Mildred L. Waters in 1943 at St. Joseph’s Church, San Diego, CA. Ken graduated from NE State Teachers College (now known as Truman University) in Kirksville, MO. He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran during the Pacific Era as a pilot, remaining in the Reserves as a Lt. Commander. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Elk’s Lodge 158, American Legion Post 32, Department of Veterans Affairs, Sangamon County Farm Bureau and senior golf league. He retired from Country Companies Insurance in 1985 after thirty-two years as an insurance adjuster. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters: Evelyn Kurz and Betty Chatten and one brother, Donald Kurz. Surviving are his wife, Mildred L. Kurz of Springfield; two sons: Donald Kurz of Jefferson City, MO and Douglas (wife, Sue) Kurz of Springfield, IL; one daughter, Debbie (husband, Dan) Hannemann of Elburn; five grandchildren: Stephanie (husband, Jim) Phillips, Ryan Kurz, Michelle Hannemann, Kathleen Hannemann and Ken Hannemann; one great granddaughter, Calla Phillips; one brother, Frank Kurz of St. Louis, MO and several nieces and nephews. Cremation accorded by Cremation Tribute Center, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 20, 2006 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a Prayer Service at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2006 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield, with Rev. David Hoefler celebrant. Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, October 23, 2006 at Camp Butler National Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail will conduct military honors.
