

Leonard F. Kane, 90, of Springfield, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, October 22, 2010. He died at St. John's Hospital at 3:23 p.m., surrounded by his family. Leonard was born to Anna and Earl Kane on March 15, 1920. He married Bonnie Mae Fortman on November 29, 1943. She preceded him in death on April 25, 1991. He later married Helen Quinn on December 17, 1993 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Springfield. He graduated from Feitshans High School and started work for the U.S. Post Office in November of 1941 and joined the Army in 1942 to fight in WWII, where he received a Battlefield Commission. Leonard stayed in the Army Reserves reaching the rank of Col. and was the Deputy Commander of 303rd Ordinance Group after 38 years. He retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1984 after 41 years of service starting as a carrier and ending as supervisor of mail. Leonard also officiated baseball, football and basketball for 40 years. He enjoyed golfing at the Rail Golf Course where he was a charter member. He also played slow pitch softball for the Postal Club. He was a member of KC 364, Elks Club, Firemans Postal Club, Chatham American Legion, Eagles, ROA, NARF and Sacred Heart Holy Name Society. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was of the Catholic faith and a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Leonard always had a joke, knew everyone and called everyone his buddy. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Anna and Earl Kane; three brothers, Earl, Louis and Pat; step-daughter, Cathy Brown; and a son-in-law, Gary McCormick. He is survived by his second wife, Helen Bumpus Kane of Springfield; Leonard's sons, Michael (wife, Carol) Kane of Rochester and Larry (wife, Dianne) Kane of Springfield; daughter, Cheryl (husband, Marvin) Sanders of Springfield; step-son, Pat (wife, Patty) Bumpus of Springfield; step-son-in-law, Dr. Duane Brown of Loami; seven grandchildren, Megan Kane, Michael Kane, Teresa Kitchen, Lawrence Kane, Jr., Bryan Kane, Melanie McCormick and Kevin McCormick; ten great-grandchildren; and two sister-in-laws, Hope Kane of Springfield and Jean Kane of California. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 until the Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 730 South 12th St., Springfield, with Rev. Steve Thompson, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
