Leroy E Sekardi, 81, formerly of Springfield, living in Christopher, IL, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Carbondale Memorial Hospital. Leroy was born on March 25, 1931 in Mulkeytown, IL, the son of John and Adella (Joost) Sekardi. He married Patricia Brandis on June 13, 1959 in Springfield. She preceded him in death in 2006. He later married Peggy Wayne on February 11, 2009. She preceded him in death in 2011. Leroy proudly served our country during the Korean War in the Navy. After his service to our country he went to work at Fiat Allis for 30 years until he retired in 1985. He later worked at Horace Mann, retiring in 1996. Leroy was very active during his retirement. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Springfield, later becoming an active member at St. Andrew’s in Christopher, IL, he was a member of VFW Post 755, American Legion Post 528 in Christopher, IL, the Polka Club of America, Knights of Columbus 3943 in Christopher, IL, and a former member of the Illinois State Police Auxillary. Leroy loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them in their different sports activities. He was also an avid Cardinal’s fan. Surviving are his son David (Rhia) Sekardi of Chatham; 5 grandchildren, Vanessa, Joshua, Jaimie, Christopher, and Matthew; son-in-law, Dan Barrett; his siblings, Marie Dunn of Chicago, Raymond Sekardi of Oregon, and Barbara Rhine of Coello, IL, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Dawn Barrett in 2007. A memorial mass will be held on Friday, February 1, 2013 at 11 am at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 1725 S Walnut St Springfield IL 62704 with Fr. Jeff Grant celebrating the mass. A memorial gathering will be held at 10 am until the time of mass at the church. Inurnment will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with the Sangamon County Interveterans Burial Detail providing military honors.
