He was born in Benton, IL May 27, 1939 the only child of Leslie C. and Mildred (Sims) Van Valkenburg Sr. He married Norma Hitchings in Springfield, February 16, 1985 and she survives.
He is also survived by his step-children: Trista (Craig) Graham of Sanford, FL and Corey (Rebecca) Kraus of Bethlehem, GA. There are seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Charlie began his career as an educator, teaching in the East Moline, IL School District as a science teacher at East Moline High School and then at Lake Forrest High School, Lake Forrest, IL. He later came to Springfield and finished his career as a project manager with his focus on water pollution with the State of Illinois Environmental Protection Agency retiring in 2001.
A true advocate of nature and conservationist, he was a member of the Sierra Club. He also had a passion for history and especially the Civil War. He was a member of the 114th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry.
He participated in many re-enactments where he specialized in shooting of firearms. He was also an avid collector of Pipes, which he enjoyed smoking and an avid cyclist.
Cremation Rites will be accorded by the Bisch Crematory.
A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held from 4-6 pm on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at Bisch Funeral Home West 2931 S. Koke Mill Rd. Springfield, IL.
