Loren D. "Pete" Cameron

May 12, 1932May 13, 2019

Loren D. “Pete” Cameron peacefully passed away on May 13 at the age of 87.

Loren, son of George Dewey Cameron and Marie Cameron, grew up in Springfield and Clinton, and was a proud graduate of Millikin University. As he told it, he fell in love with his high school sweetheart, Jeannette Hughes, the moment he first saw her. During their marriage of nearly 68 years, they raised four children (Ann, Scott, Robert and Elizabeth) and spoiled seven grandchildren (Sarah, Rob, Tyler, Mira, Ben, Kate, and Aly). Loren also leaves behind his sister, Merrill Dees, son-in-law Sam Cigelnik, future grand-son-in-law Colin Wettstein, and his beloved canine companion, Tootsie.

In 1964, after working with the Illinois Central Railroad and Price Waterhouse, Loren brought his young family to Springfield, where he entered into an accounting partnership with Bob Patterson. Loren became widely known and highly regarded as a certified public accountant, practicing in Springfield for more than 40 years.

The Camerons purchased a home and 10 acres in Auburn in 1971, where they raised cattle and Christmas trees and enjoyed small-town family life. With their children grown, they moved back to Springfield in 1991.

For fun, Loren played bridge and tennis, worked on model trains and airplanes, tended his garden and piddled around the house. His favorite sweatshirts reads, “This grandpa can fix anything!” Loren and Jeannette loved travel and explored the nation in their camper. They also participated in a number of United Methodist mission trips, helping to build churches and schools not only Alaska and other parts of the U.S. but also in Haiti, Zimbabwe, Chile, and Peru.

The Cameron family will hold a private graveside service in Clinton. They ask that gifts in Loren’s memory be made to the Benld Animal Shelter (P. O. Box 53, Benld, IL 62009) or the Central Illinois Foodbank (1937 East Cook, Springfield IL 62703). Bisch Funeral Home West, Springfield, is in charge of arrangements.

I'm so sorry that Loren is gone. I kept thinking about calling him and others for breakfast because that was always enjoyable, hearing his stories of success in fixing technical and mechanical problems at home. More importantly, he was always kind and considerate on the tennis court but always competitive at the same time. I know that he enjoyed his family and often talked about them. He'll be missed by me and all of his friends.
