

Louis “Skets” Galassi, 89, of Springfield, died at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2004 at Capitol Care. Louis was born December 2, 1914 in Springfield the son of Louis and Assunta Marconi Galassi. He married Florence Kunz August 31, 1940 in Springfield. Mr. Galassi was employed as a coal miner for Bryan Eddie Coal Mine and also worked for Certified Equipment Company. He was a former member of Local Laborer Union #477 and the United Mine Workers of America. He coached little league baseball and played in the Men’s League for Hub Clothiers and Fofi Grocers. He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during WWII aboard the USS Willoughby, and a member of the PT Boat Squadrons, Bases and Tenders He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Louis Galassi, Jr.; four brothers: Joseph, Theodore, Angelo and John Galassi and three sisters: Helen Sefick, Mary Kenal and Matilda Huffman. He is survived by his wife: Florence I. of Springfield; three sons: Michael (wife, Penny) Galassi of Riverton, James (companion, Connie Hedge) Galassi of Athens, Thomas (wife, Debra) Galassi of Petersburg; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; two sisters: Viola “Toni” Martin of San Francisco, CA, Emma Danner of Springfield and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5-8:00 p.m., Friday, October 1, 2004 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, October 2, 2004 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2119 N. 20th St., Springfield, IL 62702 with Very Rev. Thomas Liebler, V.F. celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors. Memorial contributions may be made to St Aloysius Church, 2119 N. 20th St. Springfield, IL 62702.
