Lt. Col. Madison Post 1915 - 2014

Madison Post died peacefully in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on May 5, 2014, at his son's home. In his 98-year-long lifetime he experienced extraordinary changes in daily living: horse-drawn carriages, automobiles, radio, the great depression, long-distance telephones, antibiotics, routine air travel, television, nuclear weapons, moon landings, personal computers, the internet, and iPhones. Madison was born in Tampa, Florida, on September 18, 1915. He worked his way through college and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1939 with a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. After graduation he entered the U.S. Army as an ROTC officer and soon found himself fighting in WW2. In 1944 he married his lifelong sweetheart Clara Kraus of Chicago, IL, during an R&R break from the war.

During WW2 Madison was stationed in England, North Africa, and Italy as an Ordinance Officer, fighting against Rommel and Mussolini. He is credited with devising field retro-fits for water-proofing tanks and trucks used in amphibious landings. Post-war duties included a two-year assignment in Tehran, Iran, advising the Shah's government on modernizing the country's automotive infrastructure.

Madison and his family moved to Springfield in 1962 after a 20-year military career. He worked both for Allis Chalmers (diesel engine design) and for the Illinois Department of Transportation (Traffic Safety Division) until full retirement in 1986. The Post family had two homes on Lake Springfield, sequentially on West Fairview and Maple Grove. Madison served on the Ball-Chatham school board for many years, and was active in the Little Flower Men's Club.

Madison's wife Clara passed away in 2003. They will be buried together with full military honors in Camp Butler National Cemetery, following a 12:30 p.m. memorial mass at Little Flower Church in Springfield on May 9. Madison is survived by his two sons and their wives - Madison and Donna Post of Boulder, Colorado, and Warren and Judy Post of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. He has four grandchildren - Robert, Douglas, Lauren, and Jessica - and two step-grandchildren - Jason and Jessica Kaufman.
