Marguerite H Hughes

Marguerite was born January 31, 1919, the daughter of E. M. and Leta Conner of Auxvasse, MO. She graduated from Orton-Rice Business College in Columbia, MO and worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Columbia for 13 years. She married George R. Hughes on March 8, 1947 in Columbia, where they both worked until October 1953. At that time, George and Marguerite moved to Springfield with their son Bill, and the couple called Springfield home from that day onward.

Marguerite was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church since 1954, and a member of Chapter HU of PEO Sisterhood. She enjoyed and dedicated countless hours to volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, Optimissus Club, and the Illinois Presbyterian Home. She also enjoyed traveling and being close to her family. Together, she and George visited all 50 states in their retirement years, and made many trips to see family all over the country. Her cooking and baking skills were well known. She baked treats for countless church and charity functions, and she often brought large quantities of her home-baked chocolate chip cookies cross-country on family visits. It seemed as though Marguerite was loved by everyone she met, and she became “mom” to many through the years.

She is preceded in death by her beloved husband George of 66 years; her parents; two sisters; a brother; and her son William Conner Hughes. She is survived by daughter, Catherine Doyle (and husband Thomas); daughters-in-law, Janice Hughes and Betsy Hughes Buchanan (and husband Larry); 5 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren; as well as nieces, nephews, and other loving extended family.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 533 S. Walnut Street, Springfield.

Funeral Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2015 at Westminster Presbyterian Church with The Reverend Dr. Blythe Denham Kieffer officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
