
Mary Ann Zak, of Springfield, died at 2:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at Memorial Medical Center. Mary Ann was born May 8, 1952 in Quincy, the daughter of Edmund and Catherine Oldham Derhake. Mary Ann graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. She attended Southern Illinois UniversityEdwardsville and achieved her masters degree from the University of IllinoisSpringfield. She was passionate about her career in teaching and administration. Mary Ann was a special education teacher in the St. Louis area for 12 years and later taught at Virden High School for more than 20 years. After retirement, she was a beloved substitute teacher, especially at St. Agnes School, where her grandchildren attend. Mary Ann was actively involved at St. Agnes Parish. She loved to read and spend time with her grandchildren and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Thomas Derhake. She is survived by her son, Nathan (Christa) Zak of Springfield; grandchildren, Natalie and Colin Zak, both of Springfield; siblings, Patrick (Nancy) Derhake and Martin Derhake, both of Springfield, and Peggy Derhake of Collinsville; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th Street, Springfield. The visitation will begin with a prayer service. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 245 N. Amos, Springfield, with Rev. Robert J. Jallas, celebrant.
