

Mary was born on November 29, 1924, in Springfield, the daughter of James M. and Elizabeth (Stout) Fitzgerald. She married Harold Lee Sellers on September 10, 1949 in Springfield. He preceded her in death on March 24, 1989.
She graduated from Springfield High School, Springfield College in Illinois, St. Francis School of Nursing in Evanston, and received a B.S.N. degree from Loyola University in Chicago. Mary was a registered nurse serving in many different roles at St. John’s Hospital, Memorial Medical Center, for the State of Illinois, and was also a visiting nurse.
Mary was active in many community organizations including St. John’s Good Samaritans, the Mary Bryant Association, American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, and on the Visiting Nurses Board.
She had deep faith and was a lifelong member of Blessed Sacrament Church and Altar and Rosary Society. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Mary was a people person, always offering a kind word, listening ear, or caring thought to others. She enjoyed writing, reading, traveling, and loved spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Jane Culp; brother, James M. Fitzgerald, Jr.; and niece, Mary Ko.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Mary Lee (Doug) Matthews of Bloomington, Anne (Michael) Carmean of Bloomington, Judy (Bob) Gleeson of Cary, and Betsy (Mark) Jones of Springfield; six grandsons, Brian (Jesica) Matthews, Cullen (Katie) Matthews, Jonathan (Chantel) Carmean, Bradley (Erin) Carmean, Michael Gleeson, and Robbie (fiancée, Sammie Easley) Gleeson; two granddaughters, Megan Gleeson and Lindsey Jones; six great-grandchildren Keiley, Cole, and Aria Carmean, Harrison and Amelia Matthews, and McKenna Carmean; niece, Jane Culp; great-niece, Pam Ko; and great-nephew, James Ko.
The family would like to thank St. Joseph’s Home for the loving care that she received from the staff and religious sisters.
Private family services were held at Blessed Sacrament Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery.
