

Mary E. Spann, 87, of Springfield died at 3:18 a.m. on Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at St. John's Hospital. Mary was born November 23, 1921 in Springfield, the daughter of Lawrence and Catherine Kelley Rethinger. She married Raymond B. Spann, he preceded her in death. Mary graduated from Ursuline Academy in 1941. She received an occupational degree and worked for a time as a hairdresser. Mary was a homemaker who loved her family dearly. She enjoyed painting, spending time with friends, and playing cards. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and four siblings, Lawrence Rethinger, Jr., Raymond Rethinger, Helen Cain and James Rethinger. Mary is survived by four sons, Edward L. (wife, Janice) Spann, Thomas R. (wife, Carolyn) Spann, Wayne E. (wife, Margaret) Spann and James D. Spann all of Springfield; six grandchildren, Dr. Sarah R. Spann (husband, Joe Landers) of Champaign, Wayne A. "Andy" Spann, of Springfield, Courtney Spann of Pleasant Plains, Nicholas L. Pool of the Quad Cities, Timothy R. Pool of Quincy and Megan (husband, Jeff) Wells of Chatham; four great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Olivia, Evan and Kaylie; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 4:00 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral ceremonies will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Salisbury Christian Church, 7523 Walnut St., Pleasant Plains, with Rev. Bob Green officiating. Burial will follow in Salisbury Cemetery.
