He was born in Springfield, IL, on December 10, 1965, the much-loved son of Dr. Larry and Virginia “Stevie” Holcomb.
Graduating from Springfield High in 1984, Matt was a proud Senator, carrying on a family athletic tradition there. He attended Augustana College and the University of Colorado Boulder in the 1980s. Matt was a true Packers and Colorado Buffalos fan and he loved the football season and rooting for the Pack and his Buffalos. In Boulder, he worked in property management, and upon returning to Springfield, with District 186. Beginning in 2004, Matt worked as a local realtor. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing. One of the highlights of Matt’s year was participating in the annual fishing trip to Bennett Spring State Park in Missouri, which was started by his father. This annual fishing trip will not be the same without him, his brother Greg, and his father, Larry.
Matt’s gracious demeanor, generous spirit, and ability to put those around him at ease made him truly a special person. It is without question that he was one of those people who treated strangers as friends and had more friends than most of us could imagine ever having ourselves. These same qualities made Matt a loving father, as he adored his three children, Tatym Kelly, age 12, Emmett Holcomb, age 11, and Finnegan Holcomb, age 10. He was a mentor to Chaize and Cody Mattison and loved them as sons.
He was preceded in death by his father, Larry; and older brother, Greg. Matt is survived by his mother, Stevie; three children, Tatym, Emmett, and Finnegan; sister, Jennifer (Bill Tubbs) Johnson; niece, Ling Tubbs; companion, Jessica Ralph; several cousins; a loving, extended family; and many friends who were like family.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
A private family inurnment will be held. Matt’s friends will host a Celebration of Life at a later date.
