Matthew Michael (Mike) Cummins

Matthew Michael (Mike) Cummins, 70, of Springfield, died at 12:40 p.m. on March 24, 2007 at St. John’s Hospice. He was born on April 21, 1936 in Springfield, the son of John Joseph and Della Agnes McDermott Cummins. He married Mary Clare Thoma on September 2, 1961. He married Vivian Hibner in 1989. He graduated from Cathedral Boys High School and attended Springfield College of IL. He began his career at Overaker’s Drug Store. He was owner of Doctor’s Park Pharmacy from 1960 – 1994. He retired from University West Pharmacy in 2005. Mike was a member of St. Agnes Church and St. Agnes Holy Name Society, Springfield Pharmaceutical Association, Elks Lodge and Knights of Columbus Council #364. He served in the United States Army. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son: Mark Christopher Cummins; sister: Marian Stillwagon; brother: Robert Cummins; and his wife: Vivian Cummins. He is survived by two daughters: Mary Catherine Cummins of Des Plaines and Elizabeth Marie (husband, Theodore) Vandercar of Decatur; one son: David Michael Cummins of Boise, ID; former wife: Mary Clare Cummins of Decatur; four grandchildren: Gretchen, Audrey, Mitchell and Bradley Vandercar all of Decatur; two brothers: John (wife, Grace) Cummins and Frank (wife, Carol) Cummins; one sister: Patsy (husband, Jim) Herron all of Springfield; one sister-in-law: Nancy Cummins of Salisbury; step-son: Jimmy (wife, Angel) Hatfield; two step-granddaughters; one step-grandson all of Springfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. A Memorial Gathering will be held at St. Agnes Church from 10:30 a.m. until time of Memorial Mass at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 with Rev. Robert Jallas, celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Springfield. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Martin DePorres Center, 1725 South Grand Ave. East, Springfield, Illinois 62703 and the American Cancer Society.
