

Melvin Feldman, 99, of Springfield, passed away Friday, May 18, 2012 at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.
He was born in Warsaw, Poland April 16, 1913 the son of Alex and Esther Kerschner Feldman. He came to the United States arriving at Ellis Island, NY in 1920 with his mother. He married Ruth Popek in St. Louis MO., April 27, 1941 and she preceded him in death February 20, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Marsha Feldman and his sister, Evelyn Goldfarb.
Melvin was a veteran of the United States Army serving in WW II. He served as a radio mechanic and as an instructor of radar. He received a good conduct medal. A radio engineer, Melvin was a co-founder of WMAY Radio in Springfield in 1950. He became co-owner of WXCL Radio in Peoria, IL in 1964 and retired from both stations in 1980. Melvin was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was a member of Temple Israel.
Surviving are his daughter, Joanne "'Joannie" (husband Mike) Schafts of Springfield, 2 granddaughters; Rachel (husband Dan Kirshbaum) Schafts of Montreal, Canada, and Stefanie (husband Dan) Furman of Lafayette, CO. a great granddaughter, Natalie Furman, his brother, Irving (wife Trenia) Feldman of Brandon, Miss. and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery in St. Louis, MO on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 11:00 am with Rabbi Michael Datz officiating.
