

Norma Ellen Burns, 81, of Springfield, died at 10:40 p.m. Saturday, December 18, 2004, at St. John’s Hospice. Norma was born May 12, 1923, in Decatur, IL, the daughter of John Roy and Margaret Lorretta Moore Oldridge. She married Joe Burns February 3, 1952, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Springfield. She attended St. Agnes Grade School and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1941. She worked as a secretary for the State of Illinois, in various offices, including Secretary of State Charles Carpentier. She worked for Samuel Shapiro in the offices of Lieutenant Governor and Governor. She ended her career as a secretarial supervisor for the Illinois Senate Democrats on the staff of Phillip Rock, retiring in 1983. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority for over 50 years She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband of 52 years: Joe Burns of Springfield; two sons: Craig E. (wife, Susan) Burns of Springfield and Brian P (wife, Mary) Burns of Springfield; one daughter: Marybeth (husband, Donald) Evans of Springfield; three granddaughters: Molly and Annie Burns and Rachel Evans; two grandsons: Charlie Burns and Logan Evans all of Springfield; Sister: Imogene “Jean” Rittenhouse of Springfield. The family will receive friends from 4-7:00 pm on Tuesday, December 21, 2004, at Kirlin – Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St. Springfield. Visitation will start with a prayer service at 4:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1725 S. Walnut, Springfield with Rev. Msgr. Kevin W. Vann Celebrant. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Hospital, Hospice Unit, 800 E. Carpenter, Springfield, IL 62702.
