
Norman Keefner, age 72, of Springfield, died Saturday January 17th, 2004 at Banner Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona following a brief illness. He was born March 31st, 1931 in Springfield, Illinois, the son of Hugo Paul and Julia Burns Keefner. Norm was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Julia, and brothers- John, Paul, William, and Fr. James Keefner OFM. Norm graduated from St. Joseph Grade School, Cathedral Boys High School, Western Illinois University, and the University of Illinois at Springfield. He also attended Illinois State University and Quincy College. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in the Korean War. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for 66 years, serving on the Parish Council and Community Builders. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Eagles, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a Good Samaritan Volunteer at St. John’s Hospital and a charter member of Friend-In-Deed, F-Troop. He was a Committee member of Golf for Literacy, and a Springfield College in Illinois Baseball Booster. He began his teaching and coaching career at Farmersville High School, then continuing on to Raymond/Lincolnwood High School. In 1965, he joined Springfield High School coaching and teaching staff. He retired from coaching in 1981 as the head Basketball Coach of the Springfield Senators. Norm retired from teaching in 1988 from Lanphier High School. Norm also worked at Bachmann-Keefner Drugstore as Pharmacy Technician and at the ticket office at the Illinois State Fair. Norm was active in all forms of sports as player, coach, official and fan. As an avid golfer, he had proof of 3 holes in one. Norm was elected to the 2004 Springfield Sports Hall of Fame. Norm loved working on his lawn and new home, especially the clubhouse. He enjoyed playing in several golf leagues, including Franny’s and the Lincoln Greens Group. While perfecting his chilli, he enjoyed playing cards in the winter months but most enjoyed and appreciated his family and friends. He is survived by a brother Joseph (wife-Helene) Keefner of Riva, Maryland; two sisters- Kathyrn Torricelli and Mary (husband- Richard) Mulcahy of Springfield; two sisters-in-law- Janice and Gladys Keefner, both of Springfield; 9 nephews and 12 nieces; 10 great nephews and 12 great nieces; several cousins; and several God-children. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday January 22nd at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1345 North 6th Street in Springfield. There will be a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday January 22nd at St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Holinga celebrant. Additional visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Friday January 23rd at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 South 6th Street in Springfield. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Lincoln, IL. Following these committal services in Lincoln, Norm’s family invites everyone to the Anchor Boat Club at Lake Springfield at 3:00 p.m. for a time of gathering and friendship.
