I had the great pleasure of working with Norm at Colgate University. I remember his almost daily visits to our bookstore to purchase greeting cards for coworkers, friends, and family. The art of genuine, personal correspondence is a gift that he shared with many people. I will always remember Norm as a smart and kind-hearted person with a great sense of humor. Norm and I worked together for all of his time at Colgate. He was instrumental in helping the Picker Art Gallery to become one of the best university museums in the nation as evidenced by the fact that it received accreditation by the American Association of Museums,which required a vigorous building facility report. Moreover,we worked out together in the Colgate gym and attended St. Mary's in Hamilton. We are deeply saddened to learn about his passing and hope that our great respect for Norm will offer solace to the family.

I wanted to share my heartfelt condolences in the recent passing of Norm. I attended school in Sherburne, New York with Norms son Adam. After years of being out of school I began to work at Colgate Univeristy and met Norm there in the fitness center. With quick witted humor and and avid workout schedule Norm and I had built a "friendship" which I took to heart. He was always sincere, generous and kind. With that I am truly sorry for your loss. I also will always remember Norm on my birthday for the rest of my life as I was always greeted at some point with a " Happy Birthday" and a handshake. These type of people seem to be few and far between.

I am saddened to learn of Norm's passing. He truly was a 'gentle giant' and well respected on the Colgate Campus. I will always remember his mild manner and tremendous wit in the many meetings we attended. He made us smile. My sincerest sympathy to his family.

Norm had one of the greatest laughs I ever heard; loud, from the heart, it filled a room and lit up his whole face. There was much of the boy in him. It was my honor to work with him at Colgate where I was able to observe up close the dignity with which he carried himself and treated his peers. A year afterI left Colgate, Norm remembered my son's birthday and sent him a blanket from the USMA, which he took to college with him this year. I am the Faculty Marshal at Colgate University. I worked with Norm on the Graduation Committee for over a decade. Norm had a wonderful presence, a blend of dignity and humor. I respected him greatly, and I mourn his passing.

I worked with Norm (when he had just arrived at Colgate) on a project to reconfigure a dormitory lounge as classroom so students could experience their residence hall as a "college"; he was imaginative and helpful. And ever after that Norm was always a friendly presence when we ran into each other on campus or at the gym. I am sorry he couldn't enjoy many more years of retirement. I am so sorry to hear the news of Norm passing away. I was privileged to work with Norm at Colgate University from 1994 to 2000. I was Director of Purchasing for much of this time and worked closely with Norm on numerous projects. The words in the memorial could not have better summed up what Norm meant to me as being an “intelligent, gentle man with a wonderful sense of humor”. I also spent most lunch hours sharing the track or fitness center with Norm while at Colgate. There are countless people sharing in your sorrow at this time. He was an inspiration to so many.

Dear Mary, & family of Norm, I have such deep sadness hearing of Norm's passing. I was privileged to work with Norm at Colgate University for 3 years. I arrived in 2001 as Director of Purchasing and he shared his building with the Purchasing Department. He was on the search team that hired me and I recall at the end of the interview he asked me about my email address which was at the time "meowcats'. I explained that I rescued abused/abandoned animals. He asked what I was going to do with them if I got the job and I said bring them with me. He gave me a big smile and said 'good answer'. I am so grateful that I got to work with Norm. Not a day went by that he didn't ask me about the pets. Since I made a long distance move to come to Colgate Norm helped me find my way around various areas. He was always so wonderful to work with because he was so smart and so kind. We went to the same church and the first time he saw me in church, he came over tapped me on the shoulder and asked if I would move to another seat because he had to make room for his 'mom'. He had such a great sense of humor. He was always teasing me. He was a gentleman's gentleman. My heart goes out to you for your loss. It is indeed a loss for everyone who has ever had the pleasure and privilege to know Norm. Heaven has received the best of the best. Keep watch over us Norm...we still need you. Barbara

We lost a good man. Norm was always one who was able to look you in the eye and give you a truthful honest reply. His character was one of honor and friendship. His qualities were very much admired.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Norm's passing. I first met Norm in the 80's in Williamstown MA where I was the Director of the Williamstown Youth Center and he was on my Board of Directors officially serving as the "facilities expert". He was a dedicated and friendly "elf" that could always be counted on to get a project accomplished. When I moved to this area and was hired in the library at Colgate I looked Norm up. I was graciously greeted with an old friend passion and Norm made the time to sit with me and catch up with our lives and families. His passion for books brought him into the library where he always made a point to see me. I will forever remember Norm as being ever so friendly, kind and true to his word. A fine gentleman. My condolences to Norm's family, friends and loved ones. His life and love of life was ended much too soon.

Norm had hired me in 2003. its funny. I got out of the military and wrote my resume regarding the military as the years past and I was adding to my resume I left a line in that was military related "able to nurture and direct team spirit" that was the only line. When norm intervied me the main thing he questioned me on was that line. then I found out he was In the military and a grad from west point. He carried himself that way, always in good shape and high and tight. a military minded guy. I would have guessed him graduating from west point without ever knowing this. it just brings back a smile when I think of him. He was a great man and will be missed. He always remembered to send a card for your birthday and when ever he would see you he always remembered to ask about your families and how everyone was doing. I worked for and with Norm 1985-1992 at Colgate. I still think of him frequently. The way he carried himself, his fairness, his sense of humor - all traits I will always remember fondly. Who remembers Norm's fixed up pontiac firebird he drove with the top down? He was so damned tall his head extended over the windshield! I saw him last in Ocean City, MD in 1999 at a conference. He came to my hotel room to visit my wife and young daughters who accompanied me on that trip. What a guy. God bless you, Norm.

I didn't know Norm, but I worked with Mary for 7 years at Pace. In fact we shared an office for 3 of those years. My heart goes out to Mary in her loss, and Norms family for their loss. A candle was lit for each of them at my church in Gilbert, AZ Sunday the 15th. I am moving back to IL by next spring and will try to give Mary much comfort and friendship. I am in shock at the passing of my friend and former classmate Norman. We just saw each other for the 1st time in 50 years at our high school class reunion! I graduated with Norm from St. Joseph High School and sat next to him at our reunion in Sept. He was in very good spirits and didn't seem to have any health problems at all. We'll miss him.

Norm and I were classmates at West Point. We were members of the Brigade Staff together in our senior year and lived in adjacent rooms in the barracks. He was a wonderful friend with a great sense of humor. We served at several posts together early in our military careers. He enjoyed a fine reputation in the US Army, and it was well deserved.
