Patrick "Paul" Francis Mahon

Patrick (Paul) F. Mahon, M.D., F.A.C.R. was born April 15, 1935 in Galway, Ireland to Patrick and Eileen Mahon. He married Shirley Donlinger in 1966. She preceded him in death. Dr. Mahon was also preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas Finbar Mahon, Springfield, IL and Christopher Brennan Mahon, M.D, Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

He began his medical career with graduation from the University College in Galway, Ireland in 1960. He completed a rotating internship at Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago in 1961. He was a General Practitioner in Springfield, Illinois from 1961 until 1963. He participated in his diagnostic radiology residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota from 1964, serving as Chief Resident during his final year of residency and successfully completed this program in 1966. He served as an Associate Consultant in the Cardiovascular Section of the Mayo Clinic for six months before returning to Springfield, Illinois to practice radiology. He joined Springfield Radiologists, S.C. in 1967 and practiced with this corporation until the merger with Central Illinois Radiological Associates in 2010. He continued to practice with Central Illinois Radiological Associates "CIRA" until 2011. Dr. Mahon held the position of Vice-President and Secretary of Springfield Radiologists, S.C. from 1967-1985 at which time he began his tenure as President of this corporation. He became a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1985. Dr. Mahon served in numerous committees for HSHS St. John's Hospital including the Executive Committee. During his practice, Dr. Mahon began the radiology affiliation with SIU School of Medicine when the medical school campus opened in Springfield in 1971. He held SIU committee memberships with the Executive Committee, House Staff, Committee, Sequence II Committee, Joint Trustees Committee and Developmental Advisory Committee. He also implemented the SIU medical recognition program. He served as Chairman of this department from April 15, 1977 until May 31, 2002. Dr. Mahon instituted the SIU Department of Radiology Residency Program and subsequently served as Program Director from November 1982 through December 1998. When he stepped down from the Chairman/Program Director position, he held the clinical rank of Professor of Radiology with the SIU School of Medicine. He also held an Honorary Staff position with HSHS St. John's Hospital upon his retirement in 2011.

Outside of the field of radiology, Dr. Mahon served on multiple city, state, and national committees including the Board of Trustees of the Illinois State Medical Society where he served as President from 1977-1985. He also served on the Governmental Affairs Committee of ISMS, Public Affairs Committee of ISMS, and Illinois Medical Political Action Committee of ISMS. He served on the Board of Trustees and Board of Governors of the Foundation for Medical Care of Central Illinois. He was President of the United Way in 1981 and ran an extremely successful campaign under Howard Humphrey obtaining $2, 000, 000 in funding for the first time in the history of the United Way. He continued to actively support this organization for many years after serving as Chair. Dr. Mahon also served as a Board Member or President of the Springfield Medical Club, the American Business Club, Goodwill Industries, Visiting Nurses Association and the Mental Health Association. He also served as Chair on numerous political campaigns for the election of judges and state representatives.

Dr. Mahon was a Board Member and Chairman of the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce and served on the Board of Trustees and as Chair for the LPGA Rail Charity Golf Classic. He also served as Chair of the Copley First Citizen's Award. Dr. Mahon was also a Past Chair of the Sons and Daughters of Erin and was honored as Irishman of the year by this organization. While owner of the Same Ole Shillelagh (now Lime Street), Dr. Mahon hosted an annual golf tournament which raised funds for various charitable organizations within the Springfield community. He was a member of Island Bay Yacht Club and Illini Country Club.

Dr. Mahon is survived by his two sons, Sean Patrick Mahon and Jason Paul (Missy Grady Grussenmeyer) Mahon both of Springfield; siblings, James (Margaret) Mahon of London, England; Eugene (Delia) Mahon, M.D. of Manhattan, New York; Maeve Mahon Ferriter, M.D. (Patrick) of Killarney, Ireland; his long-time administrative assistant, Shelley Brumme, who worked with him from the time of his arrival in Springfield in 1967 until his retirement in 2011, and his beloved Great Dane, Nigel Mahon.

Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 16, 2016 at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1725 S. Walnut St., Springfield with Rev. Jeff Grant, celebrant.

Irish Wake: In celebration of Paul's life, an Irish Wake will immediately follow at Lime Street Caf, 951 S. Durkin Dr., Springfield from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.

Private family burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
