Rev. Selden C. Bernauer

Selden was born December 30, 1927, in Milwaukee, WI, the son of Raymond and Mildred Wolfe Bernauer. He married Lillian LaVon Knopfmeier on June 13, 1959, at First Baptist Church in Evansville, IN.

Selden graduated from Bayview High School in Milwaukee, WI and attended the Conservatory of Music in Milwaukee, WI. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin and a Divinity degree at Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. Selden also served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was employed as a minister at First Baptist Churches in the following places: Antigo, WI, Mahomet, IL, Carrolton, IL, Stevens Point, WI, Lincoln, IL, and retired in Springfield, IL. Selden was an organist guild volunteer at Memorial Chapel at Springfield Memorial Hospital. He was intelligent, skilled in crafts, loved music and singing, playing the sousaphone, piano, and organ, woodworking, and electrical work.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Raymond (wife, Virginia) Bernauer.

Selden is survived by his wife, Lillian Bernauer of Springfield; children, Mark Bernauer of Indianapolis, IN, Lisa Bernauer of Bloomington, IL, Timothy (Kirby) Bernauer of Appleton, WI, and James Bernauer of Fishers, IN; grandchildren, Adam, Andrew, Nicholas, Alyssa, Riley, Phillip, Allison, Kayleigh, and Troy Bernauer; three great-grandchildren; sister, Ruth Bernauer of Minneapolis, MN; and beloved dog, Wolfe.

Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m. on Friday, November 4, 2022, at Central Baptist Church, 501 S. 4th St., Springfield, IL. A funeral ceremony will follow at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Mary Ellen Sharp officiating.

Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Department of Defense.
