

Richard was born February 5, 1928 in Chicago, IL, the son of Orrison and Margaret (Carlson) Ellis. He married Dorla J. Nieman, who passed away February 12, 2012 after 53 years of marriage.
Richard was a graduate of Hirsh High School in Chicago. He was a US Army Veteran during the Korean War. Richard worked for Sargent and Lundy Engineers his entire career. He began in the mail room, working his way up to draftsman and then project manager, designing electrical systems for nuclear power plants. Richard was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Clarendon Hills, where he served as an Elder and Deacon. He was extremely proud of writing several songs, one which was sung in church by the children. Richard was a lifelong fan of the Chicago White Sox and enjoyed travelling the country and camping with his wife.
He is survived by two children, Kenneth (Amy) Ellis and Judith (Thornton) Woerner; grandchildren, Patrick (Alyssa) Woerner, Rachel Woerner, and Alison Woerner; brother-in-law, Thomas Nieman (Eileen); and a nephew.
Cremation was accorded by Butler Cremation Tribute Center prior to ceremonies.
Graveside Ceremonies will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2018 at Camp Butler National Cemetery with military honors provided by the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County.
