Rick was born on January 20, 1963, in Mason City, IA, the son of Richard, Sr. and Connie (Overturf) Pennington.
Rick’s life was defined by loyalty, diligence, and a spirited, friendly nature that drew others close. A hard-working man who took pride in doing things the right way, Rick owned and operated Pennington Lawn Care for 27 years. Through years of early mornings and long days, he built a livelihood rooted in reliability and care—work that reflected both his drive and his commitment to providing for those he loved.
On June 28, 1997, Rick married Lori at First United Methodist Church, where he was a member for over 30 years. In the years that followed, he remained dedicated to his family as a loving husband and father, showing his devotion in the everyday ways that endure—through presence, effort, and steadfast support. Richard also found joy in spending time with his Saint Benard, Moose – who was his bestfriend and by his side until the very end.
He will be truly missed and fondly remembered with deep respect for the steady devotion he brought to the people who mattered most, and for the way his warmth could fill a room—often punctuated by a well-timed sense of humor. Energetic and outgoing by nature, he met life with an easy presence and a willingness to lend his hands and his heart wherever they were needed.
Rick’s family tightly holds on to this quote during this time:
God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be. So, he put his arms around you and whispered, “Come with me.” With tearful eyes, we watched you slowly fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we would not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating. Your hard-working hands put to rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best.
He is preceded by his parents, Connie & Richard, Sr.; and son, Seth Caldwell Pennington.
Rick is survived by his wife, Lori; daughter, Bethanie Pennington; son, Dustin Pennington; siblings, Cyndie Carrier and Laurie Foster; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Rick’s memory will forever be kept alive and the family hopes, he serves as a reminder that life is too short.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
The family is being served by Butler Funeral Home-Springfield, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield, IL 62703.
