

Richard "Richie" L. Philmon, 59, of Springfield, died at 8:40 p.m. on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, after an extended illness and brave battle while awaiting an organ donor match. Richard was born September 13, 1954, the son of Ernest and Bernice Wieties Philmon. Richard was a graduate of Lanphier High School and received his associate's from Land of Lincoln Community College. He worked for the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture, weights and measures for 33 years. Richie had a heart for investing his time by serving others, both in his community and his family. He was advocate for preservation of neighborhoods in the Northend of Springfield. He dedicated many years delivering food baskets for Friend-in-Deed, participating in the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life", where he served as the event co-chair and he looked forward to volunteering every year working at Memorial SportsCare Women's Biathlon. Richie put an emphasis on spending time with family. He enjoyed traveling and coordinating family trips to Colorado, Las Vegas as well annual canoe trips. He also enjoyed spending time with his family at the IL State Fair, working on home projects requiring his frequent trips to Menards and attending his nieces and nephews sporting and musical events. He was affectionately known to his family as "King Richard". He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Ronald E. Philmon; and one nephew-in-law, Matt Dennison. He is survived by two sisters, Debbie (husband, Kent) Barrow and Donna Togio, all of Springfield; one brother, Roger Philmon of Springfield; two aunts, Anita Hayes and Doris (husband, Carroll) Woods, all of Springfield; six nieces and nephews, Angie Dennison, Tommy (wife, Katie) Weir, Brent Barrow, Stacy (husband, Jeff) Curtis, Tara Toigo, and Joey (wife, Brittany) Toigo; seven great-nieces and nephews, T.J. and Ashley Weir, Will, Lizzy, and Lauren Dennison, Brayden and Kenzie Curtis; and numerous cousins. Visitation: Family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral Ceremony: 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home with Pastor Brian Schwarberg officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
