

He was born July 22, 1916 in Noblesville, IN, the son of Rev. Richard I. and Margaret Greywatch Stone. He married Dorothy Lee Mills in 1942.
Mr. Stone graduated from Galva (IL) High School in 1934, earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Illinois and educational specialty certificates from other universities. Beginning in 1939, he served in the Springfield public schools for 38 years. He taught science and mathematics at Lanphier High School while instructing Air Force candidates at night in the Civilian Pilot Training Program. Later he served as principal in elementary, junior-high, and high schools in Springfield. He retired as District Director of Government Programs in 1977. At different times he was a member and an officer of the Springfield Principal’s Association, the Illinois Junior-High School Association, Phi Delta Kappa Professional Fraternity, the Springfield Teacher’s Credit Association, and the Lindsay Place Association.
He was an active member of Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church, a member of the Kum Double Sunday School Class, and served on various commissions as well as the Board of Trustees.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Carol) Lindstrom of Galesburg, IL, Rev. Miss Marian Stone of Springfield, IL, and Mrs. Patrick (Susan) Cox of Rantoul, IL; a sister, Mrs. Fred (Dorothy) Bojarzin of Rochester Hill, MI; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Lloyd (Florence) Manwiller and Mrs. Roberts (Marjorie) Williams.
Cremation rights were accorded. Visitation will be from 10 AM until the memorial service at11 AM Monday, July 13, 2009 at Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church. Rev. Julia Melgreen will officiate. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery. Boardman-Smith Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church or Oak Terrace Health Care Center.
