Robert L. Applegate

Robert L. "Bob" Applegate, 74, of Springfield, died at 2:51 p.m. on Friday, December 18, 2009 at Memorial Medical Center. Bob was born March 8, 1935 in Springfield, the son of Walter L. and Leota B. Goble Applegate. He married Carole L. Ramsey on June 26, 1976 at Laurel United Methodist Church in Springfield. Bob was a graduate of Feitshans High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving as a radar technician from 1956 to 1961. He also taught radar technology as a civilian for several years. Bob was employed as an electrician by Cilco from where he retired. He was a member of Cherry Hills Baptist Church. Bob will be remembered as a gentle and kind man. He enjoyed southern gospel music, being on the computer and working logic puzzles. He also enjoyed bowling in his younger years. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Phyllis Fudge. He is survived by his wife, Carole L. Applegate of Springfield; two sons, Mark Wayne (wife, Jaci) Applegate of Tucson, AZ and Gregory James (wife, Cindy) Applegate of Milwaukee, WI; one stepson, Dominic John (wife, Nydia) Gasperi of Santa Clarita, CA; two stepdaughters, Deborah Lynn McBride and Brenda Kay (husband, Troy) Vilayhong both of Springfield; eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and brother, Wayne Eugene (wife, Pauli) Applegate of Coon Rapids, MN. Family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 21, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Funeral ceremonies will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home with Rev. Milton Bost and Rev. Jeff Nelsen officiating. Burial will follow at Elkhart Cemetery with military honors by the Department of Defense. Memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607-3000.
