

Robert W. “Bob” Downey, 61, of Springfield, died at 5:40 a.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at his home. Bob was born November 16, 1946 in Springfield, the son of Robert L. and Margaret T. Mester Downey. He married Lorraine LeMasters on February 10, 1968 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. Bob attended Sacred Heart Griffin High School for 3 years and graduated from Springfield High School. After graduation, he attended Springfield College. Bob was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a postal clerk in Springfield for 41 years. He was also an active member of St. Aloysius Church for 40 years. Bob enjoyed golf, shopping, camping and was an avid Cubs fan. However, his greatest pleasure was spending time with his family. Bob had also volunteered his time as a softball coach, Cub Scout leader and basketball coach. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of nearly 40 years: Lorraine Downey of Springfield; two sons: Michael of Bay St. Louis, MS and Bobby Downey of Springfield; one daughter: Sarah Downey of Springfield; one grandson: Connor Joseph Downey of Springfield; two sisters: Carol “Susie” (Gary) Hubbard of Springfield and Judi (Dean) Sieperda of Rock Rapids, IA; one aunt: Connie Uitz of Lakeview, AR; 21 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews and cousins. Family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 21, 2007 at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, 2007 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2119 N. 20th St., Springfield with Rev. Mark Schulte celebrant and Rev. Chris House concelebrant.
