Robert J. "Bob" Hays, 89, of Cantrall, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014, at Memorial Medical Center. Bob was born on February 11, 1925, in Lowder, IL, the son of Albert and Marie (Bean) Hays. Bob proudly served our country in the Army during WWII, fighting in Northern France, The Rhineland, and Central Europe. After serving our country Bob would go on to work as a superintendent for his family business Bert Hays Construction, he later went on to work for Davenport Builders until he retired. Bob married Nancee Bergfeld on June 29, 1957 at Springfield Southern Baptist Church. Bob was an avid bowler, he enjoyed working around the neighborhood and mowing on his tractor. For more than thirty years, Bob supplied the Springfield area with his famous peanut brittle during the Christmas holidays. His number one passion however was being a loving and devoted great-grandfather to Brittany and Bethany. Bob and Nancee are members of the New Life Baptist Church in Athens.
Surviving Bob is his loving wife of 56 years Nancee, son Terry (wife, Susan) Hays of Lake Forrest, CA, grandson Tim (wife, Kris) Hays of Cantrall, great-granddaughters Brittany and Bethany Hays of Cantrall, sisters; Mary Doolen of Macon, Helen Chism, and Dorothy "Dodo" Erickson both of Springfield, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers: Paul, Wayne, Oscar, and Ed Hays.
Funeral services are being conducted by Bisch & Son Funeral Home, 505 E Allen St. Springfield, IL 62703. Visitation will be on Monday, May 5, 2014, from 4-7 pm at the funeral home. A funeral service conducted by Pastor Milton Crain will be on Tuesday, May 6, at 10 am at the funeral home. Burial will follow at West Cemetery in Thayer, IL.
