Robert Joseph – Bob, Bobby, Bobby Joe – Hogan, 90, of Springfield, passed away at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, February 12, 2024, at his residence. He was born on January 30, 1934, the son of Joseph and Eloise Hill Hogan. He married the love of his life, Carol Lee Spears, in Alton, IL, on August 27, 1960.
Bob attended St. Agnes Elementary School before graduating from Cathedral Boys High School. Prior to graduating from the University of Illinois Police Training Institute, he served in the U.S. Army for 2 years. Bob served the city of Springfield for 31 years as a police officer and retired in 1993 as a detective sergeant. He received the William Herndon Award in 1979 for the outstanding arrest of the year. Bob worked security at the Illinois State Fair for 33 years. He was the State Treasurer for the Police Benevolent and Protection Association of Illinois and was also president of the Springfield unit. He was appointed to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board, which oversees the training of all police officers in the state. After retiring from the Springfield Police Department, Bob worked security in the Illinois Senate, where he met Illinois Senator and former U.S. President Barack Obama. In Bob’s free time, he enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and the Notre Dame football team.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Kelli S. Hogan; granddaughter, Lily E. Hillyer; and brother, Joseph “Jody” Hogan.
Bob is survived by his son, Robert Kevin Hogan; daughter, Kristi Jo (Eric) Hillyer; grandchildren, James (Kayla), Jacob, Chloe, and Ava; sister-in-law, Sue Buoy; great-grandson, Owen; and niece, Stacey (Dean) Graven.
Visitation and Funeral Mass: Family will receive friends from 9:30 – 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Church of the Little Flower. A Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Allen Kemme, celebrant. Visitation will begin with a walk through at 9:30 a.m. by the Springfield Police Department.
