Bob passed away on September 29, 2026, at St. John’s Hospital.
He was born on April 11, 1941, in Decatur, IL, the son of Orville C. and Vesta P. (Garlits) Hinton.
From the earliest days of his professional life, Robert pursued engineering with steady purpose and a deep respect for the responsibilities it carries. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering from Bradley University (1959–1964) completing the ROTC requirements during this time. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Engineering Administration from Bradley University (1969–1971).
Bob served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1968 as a Civil Engineering Officer, attaining the rank of Captain. His military service was recognized with the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Service Medal—honors reflecting duty carried out with distinction.
Following his military service, Bob devoted three decades to the Illinois Department of Transportation, serving in various positions from 1968 until his retirement in 1998. Even in retirement, his expertise and sense of obligation to the work continued.
On October 19, 1963, Bob married Verla Schoon in Roanoke, Illinois. As of October 2026 they would have been married 63 years. Over the many years together they built a wonderful, loving and caring family.
Away from work, Bob found enjoyment in golf, racquetball, and photography. He dedicated much of his life to his faith and family. As a father and grandfather, for many years he delighted in watching his daughters and their children participate in various activities including sports.
He was an avid golfer from the age of 14 to 82 years old, an active member of the Panther Creek Country Club and their Men’s League, while also serving for many years as a volunteer golf Official for the Illinois CDGA. He also served on the Panther Creek Country Club Board of Governors as Board Secretary. Bob also gave his time and leadership to several professional and civic associations.
Bob was an active and faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where he participated in various committees and bible studies.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bob is survived by his wife, Verla; daughters, Jolene (Jay) Raulerson and Christine Douglas; five grandchildren, Jake (Rachel) Raulerson of North Carolina, Josh (Taylor) Raulerson of Texas, Jordan (Tim) Townsend of North Carolina, Lexie (David) Brazil of Texas and Wesley Douglas of Texas; three great-grandchildren, Phoebe, Scottie, and Callahan; sister, Judy Gross of Decatur, IL; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation and Funeral Services: Family and friends are invited to join us at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 2645 Old Jacksonville Rd, Springfield, IL 62704, until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Pastors Joshua Traxel and Joel Springer officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, IL with Military Honors.
