He was born July 14, 1920 to Anthony and Theresa Serra.
Robert was a proud veteran of WWII having served in the navy aboard the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier. The Yorktown was involved in major naval battles including Coral Sea and Midway where on June 6, 1942 the ship was sunk. Dad and many crew members were in the water for 10 hours while the battle raged on. Following his naval service, he married Dorothy Coleman on September 25, 1948. He worked in the postal service until he retired. Together, they raised 4 children and built numerous homes.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy. He is survived by 3 sons, Tom (Linda), Jim (Jeannie) Joe (Judi) and 1 daughter, Sandy (Henry), 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 10 am Tuesday June 24, 2014 at Camp Butler National Cemetery. The Inter-Veterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County and the United States Navy will provide full military honors. A celebration of life will follow at the Firefighters-Postal Club.
