Sara was born in Springfield, October 19, 1973 the third daughter of Phillip M. and Marlene J (Birkenkamp) Ayer. She attended Trinity Lutheran School and then graduated from Springfield Lutheran High School in 1991. She continued her education at Lincoln Land Community College and earned a degree in Radiography, specializing in X-ray procedures.
Sara began her career with Abraham Lincoln Hospital in Lincoln IL in 1996 as an X-ray technician. While there, through her hard work and devotion to her profession, she advanced her technics to include additional screening and imaging procedures of mammography.
Sara was the “life of the party”. Her infectious smile, warm personality and love for life and people was surely a recipe for her devoted friendship to so many. She was larger than life, and was always ready to help anyone. She never knew a stranger, just a friend she hadn’t met yet. Sara found a spiritual home at Lincoln Christian Church where she was a member for many years. She loved to travel and most enjoyed her trips to Greece and Costa Rica. She was looking forward to her upcoming trip to Hawaii.
Her family was most important to her. She and her sisters were devoted to their parents, helping and caring for them. They preceded her in death, Phil in 2013 and Marlene in 2016. She was also preceded in death by her fur baby, Sable Jane.
Surviving are her two sisters: Angela (Doug) Carver of Springfield, and Kathy (Frank) Havener of Morrisonville, IL, her beloved nieces and nephews: George (Lori) Benedict, Mandy (James) Whalen, Ashley Benedict, and Jesse (Kaylea) Benedict, her great nieces and nephews: Jersey Werner, Zane Whalen, Jorja Werner, Olivia Benedict, Jace Whalen, Bryce Benedict, Alexa Benedict, Ella Whalen, and Quinn Sexton, her fur baby, Piper Blu, her aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends and extended family.
Cremation rites were accorded by Bisch Crematory.
